Teenage Girl’s Room Refresh On a Budget

Creating a teenage girl’s room on a budget was easy and fun! Let me show you how I did it.

My daughter loves to lounge in her room. Her room, as it should be, has been her haven for lounging, snacking, reading, studying, and creating since she started doing those things independently.

Take a glimpse of her tween/older girl bedroom refresh back in 2019. It was one of my favorite spaces to style and she truly loved it. Well over the last year she’s been asking for a room refresh to embody the season of life she now finds herself in. So with the adventure of her high school years upon her it was time for a BIG update.

As I said, creating a teenage girl’s room on a budget was easy and fun and that’s primarily for two reasons.

  1. The base furniture in the room is all white. My biggest bedroom recommendation for children is to get simple high quality furniture. Stay neutral with color palette and style. It makes updating the room on a budget a synch!
  2. I let her make the decor decisions. Colors, wall decor, and furniture layout were generally all up to her. I set the budget and gave oversight when needed, that’s it.

Teenage Girl’s Room Color Palette

When we bought her bedroom furniture a few years ago we made the strategic decision to get white furniture. It provided us with a clean color foundation as her taste and style has changed over the years. So we were able to change bedding color, and wall decor in a very impactful while staying reasonably within budget because we didn’t purchase all new furniture.

Teenage Girl’s Room Design Decisions

She is in her room more than any other in the house. So allowing her to choose the wall decor, bedding, and general aesthetic this time around was a must. Sure, sure, I chimed in here and there on item quality and ideas but for the most part it was all her. For what it’s worth, I think my 15 year old daughter did a fantastic job! It helps that over the various evolutions of her room’s design I’ve given her more and more freedom.

Bed Update

Since we intentionally started with a neutral palette years ago, refreshing the space this time around wasn’t tricky. We didn’t paint the walls or buy any new furniture (except one thing). In fact, we got rid of some furniture. After discarding her toy box/blanket chest and twin trundle bed, we were ready to move forward with changes.

She did get new a full-size bed along with fresh gray bedding. Moving from a twin bed to a full-size shifted the aesthetic of the room considerably simply due to the size of the bed. Since she lounges with friends, reads, studies, creates, and enjoys screen time in her room I taught her how to make her bed day-bed style.

We intentionally kept the patterns on the bed to a minimum, it keeps the entire aesthetic very calm, and lets the wall decor become a focal point in the room.

Wall Decor Update

She still loves boho minimalist style. So this time around we worked to incorporate warm browns, and touches of black in contrasting textures (wood and metal). We hung a large macrame on the wall (a 13th birthday gift) above her bed and then picked up a trio of simple botanical prints to accent it.

The black, and warm brown/cream colors add an additional neutral to anchor the room.

We also incorporated some minimal cork boards for her work space (see below). She’ll add pictures and memorabilia as she desires over the next few years.

Desk Update

It’s possible that you’ve seen this pin floating around Pinterest. It is, surprisingly, the most popular pin I’ve ever posted. It continues to get over 10,000 views every month and quite honestly, I’m not sure why. The image is of her desk (seen in this article here).

Well we ditched her old hutch, hung a new cork board system, added some additional storage, a few decorative yet practical items, and voila. Her work space is updated and ready to embrace the high school years with her.

She loves it! An updated space to study, create, and rest was the goal and this sweet room meets all our requirements. The design will carry her through the next phase of life and we love how it turned out.

With hope for you and your intentional home and life.
