Staying Cozy at the Cabin this Winter

Winter is the time to get cozy! Especially at the cabin. We are lucky enough to be full time cabin dwellers. Our region of Colorado regularly gets close to 90 inches of snow per season and when we are snowed in it truly feels like a magical wonderland.

Our modern cabin is nestled into just under an acre of high alpine forest at 7,300 ft of elevation. We welcome chilly temps from mid October all way through May. Here are my favorite ways to stay snuggled up in our cabin during the long winter cold months.

As a special bonus today, I’ve included my recipe for Small Batch, Slow-Cooked, Mulled Wine. It’s really yummy and will warm you up from the inside out.

Cozy Fire

Snuggling up next to a crackling fire is the perfect way to warm up after a day of cabin chores, sledding on the neighborhood hill, or just warding off the cold.

Our fireplace is nestled in our kitchen table area and is viewable from most of the main floor. We love listening to the wood crackle as it burns and many times we remember the exact tree and moment we cut the wood, right here in our own little forest.

Warm Blankets

Fuzzy, crocheted, fleece, and wool blankets strewn about our cabin from October to May is a common sight. Colorado abounds with winter sunshine it gives a dry humid-free cold throughout much of season. We keep our heat low and stay warm and cozy with fuzzy house shoes (or boots) and plenty of blankets. Every chair and lounging spot has a blanket within reach. Just the way we (and the dogs) like it.

Music

Our timber home has shed style architecture which means we have a dramatic vaulted ceiling that runs the length of our home. So on days when we are relaxing and staying warm with a fire we love to play acoustic music.

We’ve found a couple channels we love on Spotify and the sound of indie acoustic guitar coupled with a crackling fire says nothing but cabin living to us.

Comfort Food

A warm bowl of homemade soup is a must during the coldest winter nights. We frequently enjoy soup for dinner coupled with crusty bread, a salad, and sometimes even a steaming cinnamon roll when it’s blustery outside. If you’ve never had a cinnamon roll after a bowl of chicken and noodle soup, you gotta try it!

Below you will find a fun bonus for you! A simple small batch recipe for mulled wine.
