Modern Cabin

Natural Decor for the Home and Cabin

I have always loved using natural, rustic, decor in our home. Living in a modern cabin in Colorado certainly provides ample opportunity to bring the outside in and I love using natural decor as often as I can.

The best part? It’s free!

Here are my five easy ways to decorate with natural decor that can be found right in your own backyard (or close to it)!

Decorate with Pinecones and Pine Bows

Some simple pine bows and pinecones were the perfect touch on my sister’s ‘Friends’giving table

Pinecones to me are what sea shells are to someone who lives near the beach. They are literally everywhere on our property. We certainly have no shortage so I use pinecones as vase filler, to add texture to shelves, in garland, the occasional dog chew toy…you get the idea. Pinecones can be bought or simply harvested from your nearby park.

Pine branches are just the same. They can adorn a beautiful tablescape, your holiday wreath, porch decor, a rustic floral arrangement or even garland sweeping a window. The only limit is your imagination.

We used pine branches to dress up our holiday porch decor in 2018.

Rustic decor with bare branches

Similarly, using fallen bare branches for wall decor, or table centerpieces is a great way to incorporate natural decor. Branches can be artfully hung and provide a gorgeous visual to nearly any decor style.

We recently found a skinny fallen aspen limb and used it to hang simple spring greenery. It provides a huge visual impact above our mantle.

Rustic Decor with Tree Stumps

Tree stumps as side tables or coffee tables is not new. However paying for them at a store can get pricey quick. So luckily we happened to have several on our property. With a little poly, and a small hand broom to clean them, we use several stumps as beautiful side tables in our living room and on our deck.

This large tree stump was harvested from our property and is a charming, rustic, touch to my husbands study area.

If you have trees on your property chances are good you may take some down in the future. Or ask friends who are clearing land to save one for you. If you’re feeling really bold, you can do what one of my neighbors did, just walk across the street and ask to buy one!

Reclaimed Bark as Centerpieces

Bark can typically be harvested off a log or tree stump in one rounded piece. With careful prying anyone can get bark off a dried log.

Once off, a rounded piece of tree bark makes a gorgeous visual element as a table centerpiece. This year I’m using a large piece of bark that is shaped like a trough as the centerpiece on my spring table.

Hanging Natural Fibered Placemats as Wall Art

Admittedly this natural decor tip is not completely free. I happened to have all these elements on hand so this little project was free to me. For a small price though it is easy to acquire natural water hyacinth placemats. Clustering an odd number together on a wall with a few sprigs of greenery creates a beautiful wall element. Natural Decor is All Around Us!

With a little bit of time and a pair of garden sheers you can easily go natural decor shopping in your own backyard or local park. All you need is some time to spend outside and a creative way to look at your surroundings. Natural decor really is all around us!
