A Christmas Cookie Party for Kids

Every year my daughter and I host a Christmas Cookie Party.  She invites a few friends from school and we plan an evening of snacks and Christmas cookie decorating fun!

Christmas Cookie Prep Ahead

In order to beat the holiday schedule rush we always try to hold the party early in December. Each night the week prior she and I tackle a task.

• Saturday or Sunday before the party- Buy some snacks (we like to buy salty snacks), sugar cookie ingredients and Hot Cocoa Bar fixins
• Tuesday- Clean the House
• Wednesday- Make a double batch of sugar cookie dough
• Thursday- Bake cookies, make royal and flood icing keeping them both white
• Friday- Color the frosting, set out the cookie toppings, hot cocoa bar, and snacks.
• Party Time!

Don’t Stress the Christmas Cookie Mess

It’s really important to go with the flow especially when baking with kids. Letting the girls just focus on the Christmas cookie decorating was great! By baking the cookies ahead of time we avoided the mess that happens when baking cookie dough with a lot of flour. With any project involving 11 year olds I’ve found it helps to break everything into small manageable steps. So letting the girls try their hand at the meticulous task of decorating with royal and flood icing only (and of course sprinkles) was perfect!

Timing is Everything

Having the party for no longer than 2 hours is and has always been really important. The girls arrive, hang out and visit for about 30 minutes. Next they have snacks and decorate cookies for about an hour. Then they have a dance party for another 30 minutes. Just plan on lots of great Christmas music, sing alongs, and giggles. It’ll be a great night!

Christmas Cookie Goodie Boxes

I always make sure the girls can take home cookies to share with their families. So don’t forget to buy take-out boxes from Hobby Lobby or use inexpensive ziplock containers for each guest.

How to be a Hostess

It’s so important for me to offer my daughter fun and memorable opportunities to host a party in our home. I often had this opportunity with my mom and I love that my girl and I have created something special for the two of us to look forward to each holiday season.  Who doesn’t love a Christmas Cookie Party right? She is learning how to plan a party, go with the flow when something isn’t quite right, and how to act as a hostess on the big night. I hope she will look back on these years with as much fondness as I do.
