Small Laundry Room Refresh with Big Impact

Our laundry room is not large at all. It is inside our utility closet. Like many homes, it holds our water heater and boiler in addition to our laundry machines. A few years ago I finally decided to make some changes to the look of the tiny room. Especially because it stands at the bottom of our stairs in perfect (centered) view.

When we moved into our timber home in March 2015, the laundry Room looked liked this:

It functioned perfectly fine and we were especially grateful that the cabin came with existing laundry units. But like many storage rooms, spare rooms, and extra cabinets; when you move into a new house, organizing takes a backseat.

So after a couple years I decided to put up a fresh coat of paint and embrace the industrial nature of the entire tiny room.

The dark gray wall was painted Mink by Sherwin Williams. The lighter wall was painted Silver Drop by Behr.

I accented the newly black spray painted shelves with several glass and galvanized containers. The shelves took a much more decorative stance with only a few practical storage elements in the room (such as the basket on the dryer).

The industrial pipe shelf on the wall is from Hobby Lobby. The most fun part of the entire project was repurposing old small cabinet doors into chalkboard signs.

I painted the middle of the cabinet doors with Annie Sloan Chalk paint and then used a chalk paint pen to free hand a few designs I’d seen on Pinterest.

To connect the laundry room to the rest of the basement I turned the door into a sliding barn style door with black piping from my local hardware store. Previously the door opened into the tiny room. So unhinging it and hanging it on the outside as a sliding door made a huge different in space.

You can go here for an entire post about these doors. I think they are an amazing way to break up the planked wall and add beautiful rustic modern charm.

Our laundry room is truly the workhorse of our cabin, especially because we live a very active lifestyle. Leaving the door open now gives us a pleasant view of the little room. Spending a few extra minutes to fold towels or stay on top of the laundry rotation feels a little bit less like a chore.

With hope for you and your intentional home,
