Late Summer Cabin Decor
It’s officially late summer! As the long days begin to get shorter, the promise of fall is right around the corner. I don’t know if it’s my excitement for back to school or because fall is my favorite season to decorate, but I’m ready to start transitioning my home decor.
Transitioning decor in our cabin is a slow process for me. I really love to savor it, and just ease my way out of one season and into the next. So in the spirit of slow decorating I have started to edge my way toward fall. I’m not wishing away summer but I am readying my heart for the next season that will be upon us in no time.
What is ‘Slow Decorating’?
It’s all in the name friends. It’s just decorating very slowly over the course of a few weeks. First things, first, as I’m starting to get the itch to decorate, I build a mood board for the season ahead.
When I’m ready, I put away all the current season’s decor. I clean and create a blank canvas so to speak. Then slowly, in phases, I bring out the next season’s decor.
I take inventory of our seasonal decor, shop my house, and rearrange my shelves. Often, I’ve forgotten what I had in storage anyway so taking inventory is important. Then, slowly, over a few weekends I decorate my house for the upcoming season. It’s just one way I savor each season, care for my home, and create something beautiful for my family.
This year I’m creating a late summer palette that can easily transition into fall. Here’s how I did it.
The Inspiration
Last month I traveled to Texas for a family wedding and managed to sneak in a trip to Magnolia Market, in Waco. While waiting in line, I was blown away by a display behind the check out. It was a gorgeous display of dried florals in a wooden vessel that stretched across a long counter. I knew I’d just seen my inspiration for my fall mantle.
To make things even better, I had most of the items necessary to attempt my idea already!
Dried and Sun Bleached Florals
I fell in love with the idea of using dried florals and sun bleached elements to bridge the gap between summer and fall. This idea mimics nature as well which I’m passionate about. Tall grasses are yellowing after months of heat, and flowers are drying in the wind and August sun.
So I shopped my house and pulled together all the dried florals I had. Turns out, I had plenty to work with. Then after a quick trip to Michaels to buy some floral foam, dried moss, a little bit of wheat grass, and wooden vessels I was ready.

Creating these arrangements with dried florals was so easy!
- Place the floral foam in the vessels.
- Next lay dried moss across the top of the foam.
- Gently press the largest most eye-catching floral elements into the foam. Strategically placing them considering height, clustering, and color.
- Set the vessels on the mantle or table where they will be displayed.
- Continue to fill the vessels with additional dried elements to create depth and texture.
- Look at the arrangement from all angles making sure the height and clustering is just right.
- Clean up. Moss can be a little messy to work with.
Savor the Season(s)
There you have it! Such a beautiful statement right? I love bringing nature into our cabin. It will transition beautifully into fall and now I’m inspired to keep creating vignettes in our cabin celebrating these last sun soaked summer weeks.
With hope for you and your intentional home,
