Sunny Pine- How I helped Create a Candle

I helped create a candle! Together with Porcelain Candle Co, we have created what I smell everyday…Sunny Pine!

Poured into this candle are essential oils, soy based wax, and memories. In these jars beautiful craftsmanship is fused with memories of a special time and place in my life. Let me tell you the story.

Our Sunny Pine Memory

Years ago as a 16 year old I worked at a beautiful summer camp for four consecutive summers in Colorado. During my second summer at camp I met another like-minded adventure seeking young man. He too was from the midwest and grew up with mountains on his mind.

Immediately we were inseparable and spent every possible free moment together. Within three weeks we knew marriage was our end goal. We then spent the next three years in a long distance relationship. But during the summers (when we had days off from camp) we hiked, rock climbed, backpacked, mountain biked, and picnicked, our way through the Collegiate Peak wilderness of the Rocky Mountains in Colorado. In the spring of 2003, on a quick Easter weekend visit from college, my husband proposed to me at camp with the Collegiate Peaks as our backdrop

It was the most magical, care free, time of my life.

Scented Memories

There are scented imprints in everyone’s mind. A time, place, and season of life that are forever in our memories. For me it is those summers. The smell of Sunny Pine is imprinted in my memory and it’s one of the reasons we bought our current modern cabin home. The scent and memory comes alive to us every time we step out our back door.

The Creation of Sunny Pine

In the fall of 2020, Sarah from Porcelain Candle Co asked if I’d like to do a candle collaboration on Instagram. She offered to send me a few candles in exchange for my sharing her product on my feed and in my stories.

Through the process of discussing business and getting to know each other we quickly became friends. She is originally from Alaska and loves using memories, based on her experiences of growing up with nature, to create her candles.

Through our conversations I casually shared my favorite scented memory, Sunny Pine, and a light bulb went off for Sarah. She asked if I’d be willing to curate a candle with her and of course I jumped at the opportunity!

We then embarked on the challenging task of creating my memory in candle form. So back and forth we went through countless voice texts and direct messages for weeks. My husband offered his insight too and this truly was a collaboration in every sense of the word.

Trial and Error

Sarah created a few iterations of what she “thought” we were describing. With her nature-seeking background, she knew the scent I was explaining.

She mailed them to us, a few states away, and we tested them. Something just wasn’t quite right. After a few more conversations, I offered to send her a package from Colorado. So my husband and I walked around our property and gathered pinecones, sap, pine boughs, aspen leaves, bark, and sent them to her. A bag o Colorado as she and I jokingly called it.

We gave instructions to put everything in a glass jar and set it in the sun for at least an hour before she took a whiff.

It was exactly what Sarah needed to put her natural talent into overdrive.

Sunny Pine was created and it is perfect!

The Smell of Sun and Pine

We wanted to not only create a candle from my memory but one that can stand alone as an anytime scent. This candle can be lit any time of year when you are craving the smell of the adventure found in a pine forest. If you love the smell of pine you’ll love this candle. It’s earthy, natural, fresh, and subtle with a hint of warmth from the sunshine. Sunny Pine hits all the right pine notes without overwhelming you, just like in nature.

I had the privilege of writing the product description and I’m pleased to give you a peek here.

Walking on a mountainside trail through a pine forest has been one of the most rewarding ways to spend my time. Couple it with the warmth of the sun and the crunch of pine needles under my feet and I feel like I’m home in the woods. During my late teens and early 20s I spent a few months each summer working at a camp in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. I met my husband during those days and even now I can remember the smell of summer in those high alpine forests.

It’s the smell of warm sap, fresh mountain air, pine, and the earth under my feet. Together, with the talented team at Porcelain Candle Co. we have collaborated and created this very scent. I’m proud to present Sunny Pine.

This scent takes me to those summers and the mountains I affectionally call home. I hope it carries you away to moments of adventure as well and spurs you on to making your next memory outdoors.
