How to Transition from Summer to Fall with Your Decor

The angle of the sun, the feeling of the breeze, the smell in the air, transition is coming. Fall is as much a feeling as it is a time of year. It is really the beginning of the season for gathering and celebrating the holidays.

Right before the school year starts I put all my summer decor in storage and set the stage for what’s to come. In this short and sweet article I’ll explain my process and connect you with some visuals and video to help explain everything just a little more.

A Clean Slate

To get things started. I put away all the summer decor. I have one box for each season’s decor. Yep, that’s it. Just one. I also have a few decorative bins for storing florals. Once everything is put into our storage closet, I clean.

I take this opportunity to clean and dust all the decorative spaces, and surfaces. Ending one season decoratively and getting ready to begin another starts with a clean space.

Transition Back to the Base

Once the cabin is clean I pull out my florals. I sort through them to find elements that lean toward the upcoming season without being obviously fall. For fall I always love using dried florals and a few sun-dried colors.

Limit Decor and Keep it Simple

A critical component of my decor transition process is the simplicity of it. I limit vignettes and layers purposefully. The visual calm is a welcome sight, especially as it also happens to be the back to school season and our schedule is very busy.

Take a few extra minutes to enjoy the below video. I give you a small walk around the main focal point of our cabin, our mantle and coffee bar.

As you can see and hear, it’s very important to me that our cabin be a home of rest, peace, and beauty. Scaling down our decor to nearly it’s base before we launch into a new decorative season is one of my favorite things to do. Fall is a few days away and we are ready to bring out our oranges, reds, and pumpkins!

With hope for you and your intentional home,
