Stay at Home Activities for the Whole Family

Why hello! The last few weeks have been quite the whirlwind! Our family, like many of yours, has been progressing our way through the news of the Coronavirus in the United States. What I had thought would be a typical early spring of garden planning, and the occasional blizzard has actually been full of unexpected twists and turns.

We’re thankful to still be employed and healthy in our cozy cabin in Colorado. Our state is now under stay at home orders until April 26 and schools are closed, with remote learning occurring, through April 30 (and it could be longer).

My little family is taking this opportunity to press in with each other, to lean in to our stories, dreams, and the presence of each other. We are looking at this time at home as a sweet unexpected season of family and togetherness.

With that being said, we are also enjoying the opportunity to be creative, and keep our hands busy. Each of our kids loves to be creative in unique ways and it’s been fun watching their hands and minds come alive in the free time presented to them.

Here’s what we’ve all been up to during this season of being home.

Adult Coloring Books

It’s no secret that I love to color. Throughout the years and no matter the season I always love the rest and relaxation it provides. Coloring provides me with a calm set of routines to help find relaxation and relieve anxiety. The following items have been some of my favorite supplies for coloring over the past several years.

Activities for Busy Hands and Minds

My two big kids have gravitated toward a few creative outlets. Our son has been enjoying learning how to use a 3D pen. Our daughter has been crocheting and knitting. We also love to work on a jigsaw puzzle over the course of a few days. Before the stay at home order went into effect our son made some sweet birdhouses for our daughter to paint with the neighbors too! Allowing children the space to be bored and create something from nothing is one of the unexpected gifts this season brings.

Screen Free Activities

I know this time can also be really challenging with little ones. Keeping their minds, hands, and bodies busy safely all day can be a real challenge So a few days into our chosen stay-at-home lifestyle (well before Colorado made it official), I put together a list of ideas for your family to embrace the time together. These ideas are screen free and don’t take much effort or money on your part to start.

The Gift of Time

No matter where this season finds you, I hope you are well and able to experience moments of joy. I know there is also quite a bit of uncertainty in these days as well. My prayer and dream for all of us is that amidst the questions, and at times worries, the silver linings of togetherness and family time can shine bright. After all, this time is one of a kind. I hope it is a season my children look back on with fondness and the warmth of love floods their memories. Let it be so for your family as well.

With hope for you and your intentional home,
