Family and Budget Friendly Tuna Melts

The classic tuna sandwich is an American favorite. Not only is it easy to make it’s also incredibly affordable. Tuna is protein packed and a kid favorite. We serve our tuna melts with fresh veggies, kettle cooked chips, and natural soda. Here’s how we make it.

My recipe is VERY round-a-bout, we taste it on and off as we make it and adjust the amounts of ingredients to suit our pallet depending on the day.

Step-by-Step

Start by preheating your oven to 350 degrees.

Now make the tuna. First, start out with canned tuna in water. I don’t skimp on the brand here since it’s so affordable anyway. Use your favorite storage container for easy cleanup. We usually use two or three large cans of tuna depending if we want leftovers. Family Friend Tuna Melt

Next, reasonable add yellow mustard across the top, followed up by doing the same with mayonnaise. After you mix it, taste the tuna to see if you need more of either the mustard or mayo.

Now, you are ready to season the tuna. We like to add two heaping tablespoons of dill relish. We also add salt, pepper, and oregano.

Alrighty, time to make the melts. Slice some nice kaiser rolls in half and liberally add tuna to the bottom side of each roll. Then place one piece of cheese on top of each half sandwich. You can even add a nice slice of tomato here too, we just didn’t have any on hand.

Pop’em in your hot oven til the cheese just starts to melt. Then reach in and top each sandwich with the top half of the rolls. Wait just a couple minutes and everything will be toasty, melty, and delicious.

You’re ready to serve these tuna melts hot! Serve them up deli style with kettle chips, fresh veggies, and natural soda. Then cozy up to watch some Olympics with your sweet ones!!!Family Friendly Tuna Melts

Note: The leftovers are awesome! We usually eat them with Ritz crackers or corn chips. Talk about a great protein rich snack for the kids! In the summer I just keep tuna made in the fridge to help ward off hungry kids at 2:30 in the afternoon.

Recipe Notes

I have been making this recipe from memory for as long as I can remember. I never saw my mom use a recipe either. Just a lot of tasting as she made it. So I guess the credit for this American classic goes to the genius who developed canned tuna in the first place.
